Understanding the disposable vape ban – why it matters
From 1 June 2025, a new law stopped the sale of disposable vapes in England, Scotland, and Wales.
This change is mainly about reducing waste and protecting the environment. Research from Material Focus in 2024 found that an estimated 8.2 million vapes are now thrown away every week or recycled incorrectly – 13 per second. The ban will also help reduce youth vaping because disposables continue to be the most popular product among young people who vape.
However, this ban doesn’t mean the end of vaping. Reusable, rechargeable vapes will still be available. These are a more environmentally friendly option for adults who want help quitting smoking. If you’re already thinking about stopping vaping, now could be a great time to make a lasting, positive change. Using the ‘Your Quit Plan’ Tool will help you to succeed.
What does the ban mean?
From 1 June 2025, only reusable, rechargeable, and refillable vapes are legally available in Wales. If you plan to keep vaping, here’s what you should know:
You've still got options
Reusable vapes come in many styles and nicotine strengths, so you can find one that fits you.
Save money in the long run
Reusable vapes may cost more at first, but they are usually cheaper to use than disposable vapes over time.
Environmental impact
Recycling vapes is important because it saves valuable materials. Nearly 80% of a vape can be reused, including enough lithium to power thousands of electric cars each year if everyone recycled their vapes.
Recycling responsibility
All vape retailers should offer a ‘take back’ service for used vapes, pods, coils, and batteries. You can find your nearest vape recycling point here.
Age restrictions
It is illegal to sell or buy nicotine-containing vapes for anyone under 18 years old. Selling or purchasing vapes for children under 18 is against the law and fines can be issued to retailers or individuals who break these laws.
